NEW World Record Brown Trout? Judge for yourself…

Our good friend, Brian Yamamoto from Fairbanks Alaska is receiving some major kudos and press on the humongous sea-run brown trout (46″ x 25″) he landed this March fishing on the Rio Grande in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina at La Villa de Estancia Maria Behety.  Just as fascinating as the size of the catch and Brian’s accomplishment is the life history of the fish as detailed by Sarah O’Neal, a biologist from the University of Montana.

The Estancia Maria Behety, Estancia Jose Menendez and The Fly Shop have been sponsoring a ongoing study of the magnificent sea-run browns of the Rio Grande for several years. For more information on Brian’s incredible fish, check out the blog below, posted on Field & Streams website.  http://fieldandstream.blogs.com/honestangler/2008/09/a-world-record.html

CONGRATUALTIONS Brian!

All the best fishing,

Pjp

P.S. The amazing thing about the Rio Grande is that it gives up so many BIG sea-trout to so many different anglers each and every week of the short 14 week season. No other fishery that I know continues to meet and in almost all cases exceed angler expectations. It is a must do for fellows looking to hook and land the biggest trout of their lives…

This is not a 40 pounder fish. Brian´s guide at maria behety told me it was a 28 pounder sea trout.

Well, according to the scientist from the University of MT, it sure is a 40 pound fish, 40 pounds +. The fish bottomed out a 30 pound BOGA, and Jorge had nothing else to go by, so he gave his best estimation. Check out the science it doesn’t exaggerate… Pat

    P.S. What’s your name?

40 pounds or not. only some of us dream about a catch like that. I’ve been fishing all my life and have seen some whoppers and caught a few myself, but nothing is as exciting as knowing how brian felt as he reeled in that big one. Good job sir, and I hope to join you one day in the catch of a life time.

      Chris,

thanks for your thoughts and sentiments. The fish is certainly the fish of a lifetime and I, and I bet a bunch of us would crawl naked through broken glass to get a shot at such a wonderful fish.

      THANKS!

      Pat

I took the picture of Brian with this fish. Jorge estimated the 28 lbs; because it bottomed out the scale of 30 lbs ( 2 lbs for the net). I said BS the moment he said it. I have the measuring on videotape; and the biologists came up with the 41 lb estimate, based on their studies of hundreds of the local fish. If Jorge is still saying 28 lbs, then he is flat wrong. That was a HUGE fish and Brian is a superb fisherman, not just lucky.

I believe the record Brown trout is still held by Governer Hamilton of Tasmania , Australia whose capture of a 38lb brown trout some 100 years ago, is still the world record for this fish species
