in search of fly fishing
Fishing is excellent at Dave and Kim Egdorfs Nushagak Wilderness Camps in Western Alaska. Paul and Eric Wilms fished with the Egdorfs last week and nailed hundreds of beauties just like the pigs pictured below – ON THE MOUSE! http://www.flyfishingtravel.com/alaska/egdorfs.html

Our good friend Pete Laskier just returned from the Hoodoo River out of Cold Bay, Alaska. Pete hammered the Chinooks and has already booked a week for 2010. If you want to swing fish for super bright kings on a beautiful river in the bush of Alaska with no other lodges around, Hoodoo is the place. Check out Hoodoo @ http://www.flyfishingtravel.com/alaska/hoodoo.html
It was all up to us. We were the last group of the 2008 season on the Hoodoo River to find, fish, hook and hopefully land steelhead. And although I don’t think any of us really felt any pressure, we sure did want to connect and prove the previous four exploratory steelhead weeks wrong – there are fishable numbers of steelhead to connect to on the Hoodoo. It didn’t happen. Seven of us, fishing 6 days, landed four steelhead for the week. Not what we expected, not what we wanted, but what we were able to scrape out. We probably hooked another 6 confirmed steelhead, but that is besides the point
Was it a good trip – yes it was. We were a very cohesive and mature group of anglers that knew what were getting into. Rod and his crew did a fabulous job of taking care of us and left NOTHING on the table in their efforts to get us into fish. It just didn’t happen.
So where do we go from here with steelhead on the Hoodoo? Well, we fall back and regroup. What we don’t know about the steelhead on the Hoodoo far outweighs what we do know. We are going to cut back the designated steelhead exploratory weeks to October 2nd – 9th and 9th – 16th. Rod Schuh, owner of Hoodoo, is going to put in a second spike camp between the lake outlet (start of the float) and the lower camp which will allow for an optional 3 day/2 night float. This will shorten daily float time and increase daily fishing time on the upper reaches of the river – a fantastic stretch of water. The David River will be further explored and Rod will incorporate a middle river spike camp that will allow anglers to fish from the upper river to the middle, overnight and continue to fish their way down to the lower river. It is interesting to note that the David produced 50% of the steelhead landed this season. In addition, other never-before-fished-rivers, within striking distance of the lodge, that are known to have steelhead runs, will be fished and explored.
So that’s it. We didn’t hit the steelhead like we hoped for or expected, but we’re not giving up.
What continues to baffle us about steelhead on the Hoodoo is the large numbers of kelt-steelhead Alaska DF&G employees see at the weir above the lodge every June. It just doesn’t figure, but we WILL figure it out.
NOTE: Dave and Kim Egdorf’s Wilderness Camps on the upper Nushagak River in western Alaska are a step back in time 20 plus years when Alaska sportfishing was in its adolescence. When there were more bears than anglers; where fishing in wilderness solitude was a soulful experience – a chance to recharge the batteries…
It still exists at Egdorfs and I encourage all of you to experience this quickly disappearing Alaska wilderness fly fishing adventure before it goes the way of the wooly mammoth.
August 14, 2008: Mike, Martha, and Michelle:
Just a note to let you know how great the trip to Dave and Kim’s camps were. It was our best fishing experience in AK to date. It wasn’t just the fishing, (excellent), but really the whole package. Two comfortable camps, truly enjoyable guides and hosts. We also caught the best weather week they had to date!

Keep us in mind for future adventures, we will be in touch for other trips. The Fly Shop assistance was invaluable on such a short planning window.I also wanted to tell you how Susan from Beaver Creek helped get us lodging. When I contacted her they were booked for the dates we needed, but she recommended the Thai Inn which had available rooms. Susan then called me that evening to ensure that we had rooms and was ready to offer more help if we needed it. That is going the extra mile and should we get back to Dillingham I know who we will contact first.
Again, Thank you
Bill Clark
Hi everyone,
I just got news that there has been a major volcano eruption in the Aleutian Islands, west of Dutch Harbor better than a thousand miles west of Anchorage. The 50,000 foot plume of ash and rock came from Kasatochi.
So far Alaska Airlines has cancelled 41 flights in and out Anchorage due to worries of ash contaminating jet engines on their aircraft.
Update 08.08.08 @ 4:03 p.m.: As of Monday afternoon Alaska Airlines flights are flying on schedule and they will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary flight schedule adjustments as warranted. See: http://www.alaskaair.com/as/www2/flights/Irregular-Operations.asp

The Pacific Ring of Fire is very active of late, from Chaiten, Chile all the way to Kamchatka.
Stay tuned,
Pat
I am so excited about my steelhead fishing trip to the Hoodoo River on the Alaskan Peninsula. Myself and six other anglers: Marty Johnson, Joe Regan Tom Lloyd, Ruben Rich Sandy Saxe and Tooth Maestralli our slated to fish Hoodoo the week of October 18 – 25. I know each one of these gentlemen, fished with them in the past and they are terrific fellas and hard core steelhead fanatics.
Although I have more than two months to fantasize and anticipate the trip, I am already getting my kit in order. This morning I finished loading fresh backing and spey lines on my two reels and they look great! Next step is to thoroughly go through all my heads and tips and check them all, remark sink-types and replace butt leaders if needed - general organization.
In the following weeks I will keep you abreast on how my pre-preparation unfolds and what gear I plan to pack. My goal on this trip is to minimize my gear “GO LIGHT”!
Feel free to join in and offer any comments and suggestions.
